By the mid-1970s, the international media is paying closer attention to the plight of Jews in Syria. On April 14, 1974, the New York Times reports a shocking incident in Damascus: four Syrian Jewish girls who tried to escape through smugglers are raped and murdered. The girls were three sisters – Mazal, Fara and Lulu Zeibak – and their cousin Eve Saad.
At the four girls’ funeral in Damascus several thousand Jews, mostly women, along with some of their Arab neighbors march to the U.S. embassy, shouting demands to leave Syria. Their protest galvanizes activists around the world. President Assad calls their claims ‘Zionist propaganda’ and denies that Jews were being mistreated.
