- Syrian Jews in Brooklyn Raise Their Voices

By the early 1970s, reports of the desperate situation of Syria’s Jews begin to leak out. On June 30, 1972, 25,000 Syrian Jews of Brooklyn mark the fast day of Shiv’ah Asar b’Tammuz with special prayers on behalf of the Jews in Syria. Politicians speak out, and the Israeli Ambassador denounces the Syrian treatment of Jews in the UN. On Dec. 8, Syrian rabbis and political leaders in New York hold a rally in support of Syrian Jews.
