- Syria After the Six-Day War

After the Six-Day War in 1967, travel bans and anti-Jewish riots continue in Syria, and Muslims control two Jewish schools. Jobs are taken from Jews and given to Arab refugees from the Golan Heights, now under Israeli control. In Qamishli, holy relics & phylacteries are collected and burned in town square. 2,264 Jews escape to Israel.

“After the war, the Jewish people is not allowed to go out their house after seven, eight o’clock — One person, he went to buy bread at eight o’clock and they arrest him for two months. They’re afraid you’ll escape the country. So the Syrian government, they held us as hostages in case if Israel will kidnap their soldiers, they’d say, ‘Oh, we have Jews here. We can do whatever we want with them.’ So every time when something happened with Israel, we have to suffer.” – Rabbi Isaac Farhi, Episode 6
